The Barn, Boudet, Normandy, France

The Barn is a luxurious four converted barn which has retained plenty of original character and with a shaker style interior. This is a very comfortable and nicely designed holiday home which has been decorated with a high attention to detail, with most of the furniture made especially for the property, and very well maintained. If you are looking for home from home this is the ideal place to stay!

The Barn is a much loved four bedroom property which has been beautifully converted to keep as much traditional character in place as possible whilst providing a high degree of comfort. We think this is one of the highest quality holiday homes available in Normandy.

If you are seeking a home from home the Barn is an ideal choice especially if you appreciate comfort, good design and decor and an eye for detail. Much of the furniture is bespoke.

Privacy is provided by use of the south-facing garden which has cider-apple trees and children's swing.

As you enter the impressive hallway with Cathedral ceiling and gallery handmade staircase you have the comfortable sitting room on the left with a magnificent open fireplace. Here you'll find two super large and comfy sofas arranged around the coffee table, a card table, desk (great if you need to do some work or homework), flatscreen TV with UK Freeview and DVD player.

To the right of the entrance hall is the open plan kitchen/dining room with an impressive 4-metre refectory table in wild cherry with fruitwood benches which comfortably seats 12 and the fully-fitted bespoke kitchen with maple worktops. There is a stable door to garden, fridge, dishwasher, hob and oven. There is a separate fridge/freezer in the storeroom.

Through the kitchen is the downstairs WC, utility area with sink and washer/dryer. Off this is the boot room/store with freezer, bicycles, outdoor games, garden furniture and barbecue.

Upstairs you'll find four bedrooms each with Shaker-style bespoke furniture and extensive built in cherry wood wardrobes and chests of drawers which gives a clean and sophisticated decor.

The first bedroom you reach is a double with an en suite shower room, the second opposite this has twin beds. Walking around the galleried landing you reach the family bathroom with a bath with shower over and twin sinks, the second twin bedroom and the fourth double bedroom with en suite shower room. This has a king size bed. The bedrooms in The Barn do not have curtains.

We have travel cots and high chairs available as well as an extra single bed should it be needed.

All towels and linen is proved and there is abundant cookware, matching plates and serving dishes.

Our local caretakers are on hand to help with any queries are are a real asset to us, leaving the Barn in immaculate condition between guests.

Other things to note
All linen, towels, heating and hot water are provided, as are logs in the winter.

While we do have wifi, it isn’t the fastest, so if you’re planning to work during your stay this is probably not the place for you.

We don’t charge extra for cleaning but we do expect you to strip the beds, hoover, sweep and wipe down the surfaces. Please ensure the bathrooms are clean and the kitchen is clean, including the oven, hob, microwave and toaster and that all the crockery and cutlery is put back in the cupboards/drawers. Failure to clean or arrange cleaning for a fee will result in a cleaning charge of up to 70 Euros.

There are no curtains or blinds on the bedroom windows. We wanted to make this a really authentic Barn conversion and the views are either of the garden or the surrounding countryside.

Dogs are welcome but you must clear up after them.

If you’re staying over Christmas and New Year we will provide a Christmas tree and Christmas decorations.

Local Area

Boudet is a great base to explore Normandy. We are moments from the Flers-Domfront veloroute or Voie Verte (a disused railway line cycle track) which forms part of an extensive network. This offers an excellent and safe opportunity to get about and explore the area - you can even cycle to Mont St Michel. Do bring your own bikes. We have some on site but they are better used for short local trips!

There is an open air swimming pool at Mortain (15 min drive), horse riding is available near Barenton. Bungee jumping can be found near Clecy.

Golf can be played at Clecy, Granville, Dol de Bretagne and Bagnoles de L’Ornes whose golf course is closest to us. It is a beautiful 9 hole course designed by Harold Becker in 1925 and situated in the middle of the Andaine forest. It is a very pretty, reasonably flat but physical course that dominates in the “doe-ford” glade. A river meanders through the forest and often borders the fairways.

For beaches Mount St Michel is about 50 minutes from Boudet. Carolles is the nearest beach 70 km away and the charming fishing town Cancale is 107 km from the property. Other recommended beaches are Deauville, Houlgate and Trouville-sur-Mer. Base de Loisirs La Ferte Mace is a 65 hectare leisure base centred around La Ferte Mace large lake which is a great alternative to a beach. It has lifeguards in July and August, a play area, volley ball, peddocs, mini golf etc.

More practically the local village, with all essential amenities, including a small supermarket is 2 km away. The historic towns of Domfront and Mortain (all facilities) are 12 km away.

"We had a really great stay at The Barn and found it to be comfortable in every aspect with everything we needed provided. There were many lovely places to visit including local towns Domfront and Mortain. We visited Bayeux and saw the tapestry, spent a day at the fishing town Cancales and enjoyed a great day at Le Mont St Michel. We would definitely stay again and recommend to anyone wanting a relaxing holiday away from it all.”

"The Barn was a wonderful place for our family to meet for Christmas. It was wonderful to arrive to find a Christmas tree with lights and decorations to greet us.  It was perfect for ages 59 down to 1 — we spent a lot of time in front of the fireplace playing games and reading, at the big dining room table eating massive meals, and took nice walks around the farm.  It is also perfectly situated for day trips.  We managed to drag ourselves away to Omaha Beach and the American cemetery at Colville-Sur-Mere and Mont St. Michel.  But it wasn't an effort — the Barn was just so comfortable.  We also spent a happy couple of hours buying Calvados and pear juice — and getting a tour — from Daniel the farmer next door.  We recommend the Barn highly."

“Just 4km from the village of Barenton and about 10 from the town of Domfront, The Barn, and its adjoining properties, The Cider Press and The Farmhouse, make an ideal retreat for a gathering. The Barn is an excellent residence. With plenty of countryside and pretty villages to explore, this is an ideal place for anybody who enjoys getting away from it all, or exploring the joys of Normandy. While just my wife and I stayed on our first visit, which was actually in September 2013, I'm planning a bigger excursion with family and friends for my 60th.”
